December 27th, 2016

At some point Chicago hardwood floor repair in your home will become absolutely necessary, though unlike laminate flooring it actually CAN be repaired. One of the biggest differences between laminate flooring and hardwood flooring is that the texture goes deeper than the surface. If you tried to sand and re-stain a laminate floor, you would end up with a mess, but hardwood flooring can be repaired many times over the course of its life.

In today’s article we are going to explore the differences between the types of stain that you might choose to make use of. Most often, finishes are either called urethane or polyurethane, and it sits on the surface of the wood, forming a protective coating that will defend against moisture and other irritants that might cause a problem.

Oil Modified Urethane

If you head to your local hardware store and ask one of the employees for a urethane product for your floor, this is probably what you’re going to get. It is the most common surface finish, it’s easy to use, and it is highly durable. Add that to the fact that it’s moisture resistant and you have a recipe for a floor that will last many years. Plus, it dries in about eight hours, making it a quick fix at the tail end of any restoration project.

Moisture-Cured Urethane

If you’re looking for something a little more durable and long lasting then you might want to look into this type of product for your floor. It’s a non-yellowing substance and it comes in either satin or glass. The biggest downside is that it can be very difficult to apply, meaning it’s probably better left to a professional. We would also like to mention that this finish has a very strong smell, and it dries quickly by absorbing moisture vapor from the air. That being the case, the more humidity you have present at the site, the better off the curing process will be.

Water-Based Urethane

Water based urethane products bring synthetic resins, plasticizers, and film forming ingredients that come together and help to create a moisture-resistant surface that will stand the test of time. As you would expect, these floor finishes are clear, and they have many different sheen levels. Unlike some of the others, these can dry in two to three hours, but they are much more expensive. This is definitely the urethane of choice for most professional builders and floor installers.

Conservation Varnish

Chicago Floor RepairHere is where things get a bit complicated. Conservation varnish is a two-component system, meaning it requires a bit more expertise to use. Sometimes, these are referred to as Swedish finishes and consist of acid curing while being alcohol based.

Penetrating Sealers

These are spread on the floor and permitted to penetrate into the pores of the wood. Once the process is complete, excess is either removed with a rag or buffed in. The idea is to improve the drying and increase the hardness of the wood in order to give it a bit longer lifespan.

Varnish

Varnishes are comprised of vegetable oil, and while it is not used much anymore due to the introduction of urethane, it does still have its application from time to time.

Lacquer

Finally we have lacquer, which is no longer used by professional installers due to the high flammability. If you are performing a DIY installation, then it is strongly recommended that you stay away from this one.

One thing that you can be absolutely certain of, is that we are going to find the right sealer for your floor.
